Analyzing Music: Going Genre-crazy

Have you noticed that a lot of bands these days struggle to tell you what genre their music is? There is almost an endless amount of lables these days. Take for example, Asking Alexandria. I discovered this band after having read about them touring with Alesana.

Asking Alexandria describe themselves as Metalcore, Post-hardcore, euro-trance, and deathcore. That sure is a lot of lables. The mixing of two different genres such as metal and trance might sound a bit odd at first. The song above definitely starts out on the metal vibe, but as it progresses you slowly start to hear the euro-trance side of the band. In my opinion, it blends together pretty flawlessly, and in the end it turns out to be a great song.

Lady Gaga approves of your taste in music.

Another group I've been listening to lately is Infected Mushroom. This band describes themselves as Electronic, Indistrial, and Psytrance. I think Psytrance is definitely the correct word to describe this genre. Listen for yourself:

So, what do you think about the many different genres of music? Which is your favorite? Which do you dislike?

  2. I love almost all genres, although I despise electronic music like techno (but psychodelic can do). Besides that, I can listen to anything.

  7. It's bound to happen sooner or later that we would run out of originality within genres and had to resort to mixing further and further.

I estimate that in about 40-60 more years, most genres we know will be mostly conglomerated into one and there will be more that we can't conceive until one actually has lived within the time that they are created.

  8. I have learned to just ignore the huge amount of labels and rely on music blogs to introduce me to new tunes.
That and those mega-mix torrent packs.

I wish someone would make a chart with all the labels. I remember seeing one for just electronic music and one for just metal, but have yet to see 'The One' that labels them all.

  9. Really like the first one. A LOT. Second one. Hurt me lmao. I like mixed genres opens up the door for so much more. And I cant limit myself to a favorite type of music.

  11. I kinda preferred the second one over the first. But yea, there are a lot of genres, and even more bands fitting those genres. A band wants to stand out, so it is hard to find a genre that isn't highly populated.

  12. A fan should be able to see the genre name and say, "oh, OK, I understand what that means." When I see a genre like "mathcore" I think, "what, are they screaming about numbers and stuff?" But apparently it means something else.

  13. I like everything except for the generic rnb and rap music, and kesha. Old shool rap, rock, indie, electro, drum and bass etc depends on my
    Mood

  14. I kinda like the second one more than the first. And yea, the genres are getting pretty packed-full. If they fit multiple genres, that means that they can get more variety of listeners and stuff I'm guessing.

  21. As far as lables go, I reckon that they're only good for describing music. For composing it, they can often just get in the way of true genius.
